Guam’s David Park, also known as Davidior in the music scene, set the bar for local aspiring music producers after putting out a song with some big-name artists.
Park, who currently lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend, recently released “I’m The One” by DJ Khaled and featuring Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper and Quavo. Park worked with multi-platinum record producer Nic Nac, who signed Park to his label last year.
It started with a small demo and a few writers. DJ Khaled caught wind of the demo and loved it, Park says. A few months later, DJ Khaled invited Park’s team to his studio where he met the other well-known artists.
“It was a crazy feeling. It still doesn’t feel real,” Park says.
The result of their work is evident on Youtube, where the song’s video was played more than 30 million times in a span of four days. As of Monday afternoon, “I’m The One” was No. 1 for iTunes’ top songs.
Raised on Guam
Park was born in California and moved to Guam at a very young age with his family. He grew up on the island and graduated from Harvest Christian Academy in 2008.
He’s a full-fledged music fan of every genre. He also can play the drums, guitar, a bit of piano and even the clarinet. He remembers playing with his band in high school and jamming music out of a garage.
While on the island, he enjoyed listening to the local bands play at bars and hotels. These performances helped fuel his interest in the industry
Park initially didn’t think he’d go in this direction. After high school he went off-island to pursue dentistry in college. It was difficult to pay for tuition, Park says, and after a year he decided to pack up and head back home.
Meanwhile, Park kept himself occupied with his passion for music. At 17, he dabbled in creating demos on his MacBook using Garage Band. The more he worked, the more he realized his potential in creating music. The alias Davidior was on the rise by the time he was 21.
He still had to work other jobs for financial security, even months after he was signed to Nic Nac’s private label. It’s a tough industry to be in, Park says. He says there were many long nights of working and at times, he wanted to quit. His love for music kept him going.
Now at 26, Park is proud to say he’s worked with many artists, both well-known and hidden. Since he was signed to the label, Davidior has seen the likes of Diplo, Selena Gomez, Ty Dollah Sign, Tinashe and CL from 2ne1, a Korean music group.
Park says he couldn’t have made such a feat without the overwhelming support of his parents.
“They inspire me. They work so hard. I always want to be like them when it comes to work ethics,” Park says.
He also gave credit to Nic Nac, who’s like a brother to him. The record producer believed in him and taught him a lot about the industry over the years, Park says.
To the aspiring music producers on Guam, Davidior says to never give up.
“I used to hate that saying because it’s cliché, but it’s so true. Definitely do not give up,” he says. There’s going to be many times when it gets hard, but if you want to get anywhere, you need to be persistent, he says.
It also helps to be realistic about your goals in the industry and to always have a plan, Park adds.-guampdn.com
